The Orinda Police Department is participating in the DEA National Take Back Initiative designed to collect and safely dispose unused prescription drugs on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10am - 2pm at the Orinda Police Station.
The lobby will be staffed with someone to assist you with the collection process.
The Take Back Initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Many Americans are not aware that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, abuse and theft. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away - both potential safety and health hazards.
As well as participating in the annual Take-Back event,
the Orinda Police Department/City Offices maintain
a prescription drug collection bin at City Hall
that can be used all year around.
The collection bin is accessible
Monday through Friday from
8am - 12 noon and 1 pm to 5pm.
