Exclusive East Bay screenings of Marshland, October 30

MarshlandMarshland from Spain won 42 international awards so far. We open our exclusive East Bay screenings at the Orinda on October 30st.

Marshland (Spanish: La isla mínima, “Minimal Island”) is a 2014 Spanish thriller film directed by Alberto Rodríguez. It premiered in Spain on September 26, 2014. It won ten Goya Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor (Javier Gutiérrez). Set in the year 1980. Two ideologically opposed homicide detectives from Madrid are reprimanded and sent to a forgotten town on the Guadalquivir Marshes to investigate the disappearance and murder of two teenage girls during the town’s festivities. Together they will have to overcome their differences and face the heartless killer that has been murdering teenagers in the town for years.

Reminiscent of “True Detective” (season one, that is), this Spanish crime thriller involves two very different Madrid investigators who are dispatched to a small town where two young sisters have disappeared. Director Alberto Rodriguez proves to be a master of atmospherics, using the marshy landscape to excellent effect. But what sets this hypnotic film apart is that it takes place in the years after Franco’s death, a turbulent era that adds yet another complex layer to the story. The detectives’ motivations — and futures — end up being just as muddied as the marsh.

About The International Film Showcase

The International Film Showcase was the brainchild of Efi Lubliner in 2010. He convinced Jo Alice Canterbury and Kate Wiley to help him launch the idea of showing a foreign feature not available in local cinemas or on Netflix for one week a month to the managers of the Orinda Theatre. In January 2011, MAX MANUS (a Norweigan World War II epic) jump started our project and we have been screening first rate foreign features ever since. Each has won international film awards and several have been shortlisted for Golden Globes and Oscars (currently TANGERINES from Estonia which we screened in November 2014 and TIMBUKTU from Mauritania which was screened March 2015). Our fifth season is well underway!
